First mammogram? It can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, understanding what happens during the exam and how to prepare can make the experience smooth, empowering, and even reassuring.

In Ontario, the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) offers free mammograms to eligible people aged 40 to 74 — no referral required. If this is your first mammogram, this guide is for you. Here’s everything you need to know, including how to prepare for a mammogram, what to expect, and how to book your appointment.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a special type of low-dose X-ray used to examine breast tissue. It can detect early signs of breast cancer long before a lump can be felt, making it one of the most powerful tools in breast health.

There are two kinds:

  • Screening mammogram – For people without any symptoms. Quick, routine, and covered by OBSP.

  • Diagnostic mammogram – Used when there’s a concern or symptom, like a lump or discharge.

Most first-time patients will be having a screening mammogram, which takes about 15 minutes and is done by a trained technologist.

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) makes it easier than ever to prioritize your breast health. If you’re:

  • Aged 40 to 74

  • Have no current breast symptoms

  • Haven’t had a mammogram in the last 11 months
…you can self-refer to get screened — no doctor’s note required.

Humber Bay Medical Imaging (HBMI) is an OBSP-affiliated site, offering free, high-quality mammograms in a comfortable setting.

How to Prepare for a Mammogram

Knowing how to prepare for a mammogram can make your visit more comfortable and efficient. Here’s what to do before your appointment:

  • Avoid wearing deodorant, lotion, or powder on your underarms or chest the day of your exam — these products can show up on the images.

  • Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.

  • Schedule it after your period, if possible — your breasts will be less tender.

  • Bring your health card and any previous breast imaging (if done elsewhere).

What Happens During the Mammogram?

When you arrive at the clinic, a friendly technologist will explain the steps and answer any last-minute questions.

  • Each breast is gently placed between two flat plates on the X-ray machine.

  • The plates compress the breast tissue briefly — this helps get the clearest image possible.

  • Compression may feel uncomfortable, but it lasts just a few seconds.

The exam usually takes about 15 minutes, and you can go back to your day right after. Your results will be sent to you (and your doctor, if you have one) within a couple of weeks.

Common Questions from First-Time Patients

Is a mammogram painful?
It may feel a little uncomfortable due to the compression, but it’s very quick — and most patients say it’s better than expected.

Is it safe?
Yes. Mammograms use a very low dose of radiation and are considered safe for routine screening.

What if I get called back?
Don’t panic — callbacks are common, especially for a first mammogram when there’s no baseline image. It doesn’t mean cancer — just that the radiologist wants a closer look.

Why It’s Worth It

Many patients tell us the scariest part was not knowing what to expect. Once they understand the process, it becomes a simple, empowering routine.

Regular mammograms through the OBSP can reduce your risk of dying from breast cancer by detecting problems early. It’s free, quick, and could save your life.
