Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

What is BMD?

Your bone density is the amount of bone mineral in your bone tissue. It is measured by the amount of mineral mass per volume of bone. In the clinical setting, it is measured according to optical mass or density per one square centimeter on the surface of a bone when imaged. When having a bone density test, it will provide a picture or snapshot of your bone's health.

Avoid taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your bone density test.

How often do you need BMD for osteoporosis?2024-08-09T10:07:39-04:00
How often you should have your BMD measured depends on your age and the results of your previous DEXA scan. Women 65 years and older with normal bone mass or mild bone loss can have a test every 15 years. More frequent testing is recommended for women in this age group with T-scores between -1.5 and -2.49.
What factors affect BMD?2024-08-09T10:07:39-04:00
